Sam Sparro – ‘Black & Gold’

Sam Sparro – ‘Black & Gold’

Australian-born, LA-based anglophile Sam Sparro needs to get his head straight. Choose a country and stick with it, man. He’ll have his work cut out, mind you, if ‘Black & Gold’ takes off all over the world like it’s threatening. Sitting suavely at No.4 in this week’s chart, Sparro has already bewitched the UK with his heavily synthed Maroon 5-a-like existential angst, and it’s not hard to fathom why: this is smart, stylish pop that sounds cutting edge even while it sucks in the nation’s covert Jamiroquai fans. It’s a nifty move and one hell of a cash-raker.

Holy F*** – ‘Lovely Allen’

Holy F*** – ‘Lovely Allen’

Even mediocre pop songs can have a “good bit”. Hot Chip have made a career of it. But what if you could harness that “good bit”, loop it over and over again and make an entire record out of it? Toronto’s Holy F*** – get the album for your grandmother – have sussed this plan and fashioned a four-minute single that’s essentially one long extended intro. Luckily, the “good bit” – a rising, falling, chiming keyboard riff – is so great that the audacious gambit succeeds. They surround it with wibbly noises, splashing drums, slides and climaxes to make a rocking mantra you’ll want to loop over and over again…
